The camping trip that was not meant to be

We planned a camping trip.

We've been wanting to go camping ALL summer, but the summer booked up really fast.  The earliest available weekend was the middle of July.  July 17-18 to be exact.  We then went on a hunt to find someone to come with us that had kids our same age.

We decided on the Craigs!  Stephen works with Tyler, and I am just getting to know Aimee at my book club.  They have four kids: girl 6, boy 4, boy 2, boy 10 months.  Perfect.  Right?!

Wednesday night we went to Costco to get some stuff for our adventure and I thought that Oliver felt a little warm.  We checked him when we got home and he was at 99.5.  Not bad, but I gave him some medicine, just in case.  To blow off whatever was coming.

Thursday night Oliver woke up at around 1am and would not go back to sleep.  I was up with him for hours, then just decided to sleep on the floor next to him because he seemed to be ok with that.  I also learned that night that Cooper talks in his sleep.  I woke up every time he spoke and it always creeped me out.  Curse those scary movies I watched in my single-hood-stupidity that had little kids in them.

Friday I was a walking zombie.  Definitely not used to getting up with kids in the middle of the night. Thank heavens!!

We finally got on the road for our camping trip at 4:30.  We made it to our camping spot a little before 6.  Our friends had arrived around 2.  (I slept the entire way so that I could be sociable :))  As we pulled into our parking spot, Stephen got out of the car and started to pull Ollie out of his car seat.  He noticed a ton of little red spots on his feet.  I came over to examine, horrified.  We immediately began to think of hand, foot, mouth disease.  I didn't let any of the kids out of the car because I was terrified of giving it to another child.  (As a side note, Maycee got hand, foot, mouth disease three years ago from her cousin.  We gave it to a new little boy in our ward that left with his parents on a week long Alaskan cruise.  When I heard the whole story, I was beyond apologetic.)

Anyway, after an hour and a half of driving to get in range of phone service and checking the internet, we were certain of the illness.  We apologized to our friends and turned around and came back home.  Before leaving Maycee met the Craig's little girl, Talie.  The two girls were quite distraught that they were not allowed to play together.  On the drive home, Ollie's illness seemed to hit him with force.  He became a screaming mess of pain.  He just screamed and grabbed his mouth and feet.  "Wowee!!  Wowee!!" he would say.  Poor kid.

Since we were not given the opportunity to have our typical camping treats while camping, we made them on Sunday night.  Banana boats.  In the oven.

Monday was, I think, Oliver's worst day.  His poor feet and toes were so red and swollen and covered with spots.  The spots just crawled up his legs.  His hands and fingers were also covered with them.  Today it looks like he is on the mend.  The disease is said to stay in the body almost two weeks.  So we are in quarantine for at least another week.

My house is looking a lot cleaner.  That is the positive.
